February 9, 1913 may not mean anything to anyone but the members of my mom's side of the family, this is the day my grandfather, Ludwig Albert Wolf was born. He was first generation Hungarian American born to Maria and Lagos (Ludwig) Wolf in New York. He spoke Hungarian until he went to school at the age of 6.
He was fire chief of the Levittown fire department when I was born, just what this father of 3 girls wanted when he found out his oldest was expecting, hopes for a boy dashed when I arrived, another girl. But he loved me just the same. He read Peter Pan to me, took me sledding and made me laugh. He was there when I graduated high school and college. As far as I'm concerned he was the best grandfather a kid could ask for, he was mischievous and fun. I know he was far from perfect; tales from my mother are proof but by the time the grandchildren started to arrive he'd mellowed and for that I am eternally grateful.
Happy 100th birthday Grandpa!!!
